AL MITCHELL - SAG/AFTRA
Location: Atlanta, GA
Willing to travel
A seasoned veteran actor, born and raised in New York City, Al started his acting career in theatre as “Suavae” Mitchell in the mid-70's. He studied media arts while attending Fordham University and developed his acting skills at the Afro-American Studio for Acting and Speech with Ernie McClintock and at the Negro Ensemble Company with Anderson Johnson. He performed in numerous stage, film, and television productions and his Off-Broadway performance of Jeff in The River Niger garnered him the "Vivian Robinson Award" for Best Supporting Actor from the Audelco Award Committee in New York.
Eventually, the stress and uncertainties of being an actor…now raising a family…prompted him to put acting on the back burner so he could shift his focus to raising a family and climbing the corporate ladder within a major computer company. However, this did not quell his desire to be in the entertainment business. Continuing to study, teach and coaching after-hours, allowed him more flexibility and ultimately led him to a local theatre group, The South Jersey Theatre Ensemble, under the direction of James M Brown. He went on to develop an interest in Production and eventually took on Artistic Director responsibilities, directing several stage plays, including the critically acclaimed Yes, God is Real and Dreamgirls. He also directed Don't Throw Me Away, a short film produced by Mr. Brown
Upon relocating to Atlanta and dropping the nickname “Suavae”, he got back in the classroom taking several workshops with, Kirsten Shaw, Nick Conti and Victor Love to name a few. It wasn't long before he dusted off his acting resume and got back into the business of acting full-time. Steadily building his credits once again, he has had the fortunate opportunity to perform opposite some of the most talented and recognizable actors in the business... Helen Hunt, David Harbour, Isaiah Washington, Will Patton, Keith David, Scoot McNairy, Tichina Arnold, and Gerard Butler, just to name a few. He has landed roles in several films, such as Same Kind of Different As Me, Max Steel, Tag, The Hate U Give, Burden, and the recently released Just Mercy starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson. Some of his notable TV bookings include Ozark, Greenleaf, Shots Fired, Stranger Things, Behind the Movement, Drop Dead Diva, and Blood Lands as
well as recurring roles on Survivor's Remorse, The Resident,
a recurring Guest Star on DC Universe’s Swamp Thing
and recently wrapped Swagger and Black as Night for a few
new streaming services.
Al and his wife, Lydia, live in Atlanta, Georgia, and in their
spare time enjoy giving back to the community exposing
student youth to the entertainment industry with acting and
dance lessons. He also enjoys honing his directorial skills
making short films.
